Stating that a sewage pipeline has been laid in Penha-de-Franca village, former minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte appealed to residents especially in Wards 1 to 6 to immediately apply to authorities to join their toilets to the sewage pipeline.
“If there is support from residents in this regard, Penha-de-Franca village can be made Open Defecation Free by October 2,” said Khaunte.
He was speaking at a programme organised by the Penha-de-Franca Panchayat on Independence Day.
Khaunte claimed that he had undertaken several development works in Porvorim constituency during his last two-and-half years’ stint as minister.
“Work to lay underground electricity cables has begun and the electricity department has assured to replace non-functional streetlights before Ganesh Chaturthi.”
“Work on the 15MLD Water Treatment Plant has already begun. Due to increase of turbidity at the Tillari water, residents in Porvorim have received muddy water from Assonora treatment plant,” he said.
Admitting that repairs and hot-mixing of roads could not be taken up due to the code of conduct during Lok Sabha and assembly bypolls in Goa, Khaunte assured that these pending works would be undertaken immediately after the monsoon.
Khaunte expressed concern that some residents were still not cooperating with the panchayat in the garbage collection drive.
“The panchayat has been collecting garbage on a door-to-door basis for many years, but the panchayat still does not get segregated garbage from all residents. Some people still throw garbage on the roadside. In order to achieve the objective of ‘Clean and Green Porvorim’, cooperation of residents is a must,” said Khaunte.
On the occasion, Andrea D’Silva, Sakshi Pandit, Shivdas Naik, Sagun Pednekar, Somnath Gosavi and Dr Usha Bhate were felicitated by Khaunte for their contribution in their respective fields.
