The State government’s plan to treat entire North Goa’s garbage at the upcoming Solid Waste Treatment Plant atop the Calangute-Saligao plateau has opened a Pandora’s box, with residents and local leaders coming in the open to oppose any such move.
On Thursday, Tulio de Souza, an architect from Saligao, condemned the government’s decision to treat waste of North Goa at the new plant and warned that people of Saligao would oppose any such move.
“Initially, the people of Saligao opposed the government's decision to have a plant for the coastal belt. And now, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar’s statement that the plant will cater to the whole of North Goa seems to be without considering proper facts,” de Souza said.
He said the existing garbage dump on the top of the plateau has been a nuisance leading to pollution of the Salmona spring.
“It needs to be seen whether more than 700 tonnes garbage generated across North Goa would converge in Saligao. If so, the residents of Saligao would have to bear with the stench throughout the day, as 100 of trucks would converge in Saligao plateau to unload,” he added.
He said the people of Saligao would definitely oppose any such move on the part of the government.
It may be recalled Tulio de Souza had unsuccessfully contested as an independent candidate from Saligao in 2012 assembly elections. He is the son-in-law of former chief minister, late Dr Wilfred de Souza.
