The Mapusa comunidade has given the government conditional permission to repair and renovate the dilapidated building housing the North Goa Comunidade Administrative Office, provided its heritage character and original appearance are preserved.
The decision was taken at a general body meeting after the North Goa Comunidade Administrator sought permission for repairs and renovation.
The comunidade said the work must not alter the building’s heritage character or appearance and should not create any financial liability for it. It also made clear that land rights and title to the property would remain with the Mapusa communidade.
The building must not be used for any commercial activity. “We have given permission to the government only to repair and renovate the building without changing its heritage character,” a comunidade source told The Goan.
The source said the proposal was submitted after concerns were raised over the deteriorating condition of the old building. However, the communidade has not been informed about the exact scope or estimated cost of the work. “The government has not specified the budget or given details of the repairs and renovation to be undertaken,” the source said.
The conditional approval allows restoration and repairs, but excludes any work that changes the building’s heritage appearance or affects the communidade’s ownership rights. The decision also limits the government’s intervention to maintaining the existing structure without commercial use.
