The judge, Vijaya Pol, pronounced the verdict on Saturday after the accused, Ganpat Shetye of Virnoda-Pernem was convicted for murder under Section 302 by the same court on Friday.
The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on the convict and failure to pay the amount to undergo additional rigorous imprisonment of three years.
According to prosecution, the accused committed the murder in a barbaric manner and deserved no mercy.
“The deceased was the only daughter, besides two little children lost their mother’s shelter at a very tender age,” said Public Prosecutor Sunita Nagvenkar, demanding
maximum punishment for the accused.
The counsel for the accused, Peter D’Souza, prayed for lenient punishment as the accused had committed
the crime in the heat of the moment.
It may be recalled the accused had killed his wife on April 24, 2011 at Nachinola and after committing the heinous crime the accused had surrendered to the police.
The accused had stabbed his wife, Sneha Shetye from Moira, to death with a knife. The husband-wife duo couldn’t get along and always had friction between them.
PI Rajesh Kumar and later PI Tushar Vernekar were the investigating officers in the case.
