Pernem police has busted a four-member gang in connection with two-wheeler thefts and have recovered seven engines of two-wheelers.
According to Pernem Police Inspector Jivba Dalvi, Pramod Shegade of Sawantwadi-Maharashtra, who has a motorcycle repair garage at Agarwada-Pernem complained that unknown accused had stolen two scooters which were outside the garage for repairs.
The stolen vehicles were taken by the accused in one mini pickup. Police registered the offence and formed various teams.
Police got CCTV footage of mini-pickup passing from Agarwada and after surveillance, managed to get the RTO registration number of the mini-pickup through CCTV.
Police then detained the mini-pickup owner, Mohamad Manihar (32) of Karaswada-Mapusa.
PI Dalvi said Manihar confessed his involvement in the crime along with three other accomplices.
Pernem police later arrested remaining three accused, Salman Azam Ali Manihar (27), Sultan Azam Ali Manihar (28) and Abdul Gulam Kadir (30), all from Karaswada-Mapusa.
Pernem police then recovered seven engines of two-wheelers from the scrapyard at Karaswada-Mapusa.
Engines of both scooters mentioned by the complainant have also been recovered by police and efforts are on to trace the owners of the remaining five engines which have been recovered.
According to police, the accused, Mohamad Azam Ali Manihar, has a scrapyard in Karaswada Mapusa and through his labourers, used to collect information of two-wheeler.
The gang members used to lift the two-wheelers and load them in the mini-pickup and further shift them to his scrapyard.
At the scrapyard, police said the accused would dismantle the vehicles and sell the dismantled parts in the black market.
Pernem police are submitting a report against the scrapyard owner to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate Mapusa for necessary action.
Further investigation is in progress under the supervision of Mapusa SDPO Gajanan Prabhudessai and North SP Shobit Saxena.
