Phogat case: Judicial custody of 2 accused extended by 14 days

PANAJI

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), probing the high-profile death of BJP leader Sonali Phogat, has begun interrogation of Sudhir Sangwan and Sukhwinder Singh, whose judicial custody was extended to another 14 days on Friday.

The accused were produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Mapusa that extended their custody. They are being interrogated at Colvale Central Jail where they are lodged upon completing 14 days of custodial interrogation.

“The CBI team had applied to the court seeking permission to interrogate the accused, which was granted. The investigation team will quiz the accused for 20 days from 9 am to 6 pm,” an official said.

Shortly after the Ministry of Home Affairs accepted the Goa government’s request to hand over the case to the central agency, the team consisting of a lady officer arrived in the State last Friday and took custody of the case papers from the original investigation team of Anjuna police.

The CBI along with its forensic team has already made repeated visits to the crime scenes in the partially-demolished Curlies shack and the resort. Statements of Phogat’s family in Haryana and staff of the resort among others were recorded. They also interacted with the forensic experts at Goa Medical College. The investigators are expected to camp in Goa for another few days before leaving for other places including banks linked with the deceased while also meeting people who have been identified in her personal diaries.
