A pillion rider died, while the rider sustained minor injuries, when their two-wheeler skidded on a muddy stretch of the NH66 highway at Socorro on Thursday morning.
According to Porvorim police, the incident took place at about 10 am when the rider, Shubam Mavlingkar, and the pillion, Sunny Narvekar (28) of Nanora, were returning after collecting a report from the GMC hospital.
The two-wheeler skidded off the muddy road, and Narvekar fell on the road. A truck which was moving behind the two-wheeler ran over Narvekar, killing him on the spot. The truck fled from the site.
The rider, Shubham Mavlingar, who fell sideways, sustained minor injuries in the mishap.
Traffic along the highway was disrupted on account of the mishap.
Porvorim Police Inspector Rahul Parab, PSI Mandar Parab and a police team rushed to the spot to conduct the panchanama of the incident, while they, along with the Porvorim Traffic Police, cleared the traffic jam on the highway after the accident.
The body was sent for an autopsy and later handed over to relatives for final rites.
Police are on the lookout for the truck driver, and PSI Sachin Shirodkar is investigating the case.
Incidentally, heavy vehicles on the national highway between Guirim and Porvorim have been banned from 6 am to 10 pm on account of the ongoing construction of the elevated corridor.
However, heavy vehicles have violated this order of the North Goa collector and continue to ply on the highway.
