Aldona MLA Carlos Alvares Ferreira on Thursday demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the brutal attack on activist Rama Kankonkar, warning that failure to act would suggest Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is shielding the culprits.
Ferreira called for the formation of a special task force (STF) to probe the incident, describing it as “a dastardly attack not just on an individual but on democracy itself.”
He said, “An assault on Rama Kankonkar is an assault on every Goan. If justice is denied, we will be forced to seek the CM’s resignation.”
The MLA alleged that the assault was a deliberate attempt to silence activists and opposition voices exposing corruption, environmental destruction, and links between politicians and criminal elements.
He lamented that Goa, once known for peace, is sliding into lawlessness “under BJP rule, where goondagiri and attacks on critics have become the norm.”
Ferreira further accused the State of protecting assailants while harassing victims, adding, “The CM owes an explanation. If he cannot ensure law and order, he has no moral right to remain in office.”
