MARGAO
Margao police descended on the Pimpalkatta area of New Market, Margao, in the wee hours of Tuesday to stop the vendors and wholesale traders from selling fruits at the place.
Sources said the police is believed to have descended on the market at around 5 am when the wholesale traders start the day, with fruits not only coming from across the State, but from across the border. The traders questioned the police for the action, pointing out that they have been doing business at the place for decades now. Moreover, it was pointed out to the police that the Margao Municipal Council has given the wholesale fruit traders the permission to sell their produce during prescribed timings.
Sources said some of the fruit traders called up some political leaders, who later spoke to the police higher-ups, which helped to control frayed tempers.
The police maintained that they had gone to the area following a complaint that the road is being blocked by the wholesale fruit sellers, affecting the local residents.
