Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Sushmita Dev on Monday said that some of their party workers sustained injuries when supporters of the Congress attacked them in Mapusa on Sunday and demanded immediate action against those involved in the incident.
A police complaint has been filed with the Mapusa Police by one Devesh Varma, who is a supporter of the TMC and temporarily resides at Socorro, Porvorim.
The complainant has named Congress candidate of Mapusa Sudhir Kandolkar, Mapusa Congress Block President, Shashank Narvekar, James D’Souza and other members of Indian National Congress for allegedly intimidating and attacking him and further preventing him from exercising his right to campaign in the election.
“Goa is a peaceful State. In an unfortunate incident, our workers were attacked by some Congressmen. In a democracy, everyone has a right to approach a voter and campaign to whichever party one wants. To threaten and hit our party worker and his driver is unethical,” Sushmita Dev said while addressing the media in the party office in Mapusa.
Like other political parties, Trinamool Congress is contesting in some 22-odd seats of the State assembly elections, including the Mapusa seat, to be held on February 14.
According to State TMC president Kiran Kandokar, both the BJP and Congress in Mapusa were wary of the TMC and were indulging in unethical ways to block its candidate.
“Congress thought that it would have a cakewalk in Mapusa, but with Tarak Arolkar as our candidate, they are feeling the heat. The Congress is indulging in goondagiri to have their way,” Kandolkar said.
Till late Monday night, no FIR was lodged but senior officers were holding discussions on action to be taken in the matter.
