Taking a cue from the Mormugao civic body, Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) is planning to begin a process of registering pet dogs with the council.
“I am working on a plan of registering pet dogs with the civic body. We will soon place the proposal before the council meeting,” said Clen Madeira, Chief Officer, MMC.
In order to control the population of strays and eradicate rabies in Mapusa, the civic body had recently signed an agreement with an NGO, World Wide Veterinary Service.
The municipality along with the NGO has fixed a target of sterilizing around 2,500 pets within the municipal area.
“So far around 600 pets which include dogs and cats have been sterilized,” Madeira said.
There are also plans to fix glowing belts around the neck of strays.
The whole programme is funded by the department of animal husbandry of the Goa government.
It may be recalled the Mormugao Municipal Council had recently made it compulsory to register pet dogs in the port town.
Owners have to obtain a licence from the civic body by paying Rs 1,000 for each dog. The Mormugao council has also made available a Mission Rabies hotline number where citizens can call to report dogs suspected to have rabies.
Meanwhile, Madeira also informed that show cause notices have been issued to around 30 kiosks in Housing Board and 13 kiosks opposite Carvalho petrol pump that is coming under road widening.
He said hearing of these kiosks owners was scheduled in the first week of April where final decision on the status of the kiosks will be taken.
Madeira said final demolition notices have already been issued to 40 shops that have encroached on the nullah at the back side of the Mapusa market. “The shop owners have to demolish the encroachments on their own. If not, the municipality will demolish them,” he said.
