Expressing concern over Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar's alleged remarks that coal pollution was not a serious issue in Vasco town, Goa against Coal (GAC) has requested the chief minister to verify the facts on coal pollution in the port town.
"Who has provided him with reports on pollution? When a public hearing on pollution was held in Vasco, Vasco MLA Carlos Almeda had said there was pollution in Vasco," said GAC Convenor Custodio D'Souza, while addressing a news conference in Vasco.

"Why is MPT getting a sweeping machine if there was no pollution? What measures were taken by MPT to control air pollution?"
Questioning Almeida's views on dredging activity in the State, D'Souza said: "We fishermen had approached NGT and whole of Goa realised that dredging was illegal and the effects it could have on our environment and ecology. We have gone to NGT and we will go to Delhi, but will not allow dredging of rivers and the sea in Goa," he added.
Another GAC member, Vikram Sarmalkar, informed that the sweeping machine by MPT was an eyewash and was of no use to Vasco.
"My daughter has respiratory problems and the chief minister says there is no coal pollution. His statements on coal pollution are wrong. The sweeping machine has been of no benefit. The MMC had a similar machine and it broke down in two months and had to be disposed off," said Sarmalkar.
Niz Goenkar spokesman Chandrashekar Vasta also spoke on the occasion.
