CANACONA
Poinguinim panchayat is the first among seven panchayats in Canacona taluka to begin construction of a Material Recovery Facility (MRF), which will be a collection point for garbage generated in the village.
The construction of the MRF has launched in the presence of Dy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes, Poinguinim Sarpanch Jagdish Gaonkar, Dy Sarpanch Elda Fernandes and others at Hathipal on Thursday.
According to Sunil Painginkar, a social activist in the village, Poinguinim panchayat is the first among seven panchayats in Canacona to start work on the Rs 23 lakh MRF, located in an area of 5,000 sq mtrs which already has a compound wall.
“People in the village are requested to dump their garbage at this site, which will then be segregated. Soon, a composting pit will also be constructed at this site where the manure generated will be put to use,” said Painginkar.
Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes has sought the support and cooperation of people making good use of the MRF and to avoid throwing garbage elsewhere in the village.
“We appeal to people to help the Poinguinim panchayat in its efforts to maintain cleanliness in the village,” said Fernandes.
