PANAJI
Panaji police have arrested 22-year-old Jeevan Oli in connection with the alleged rape of an 11-year-old minor girl at Caranzalem beach.
Police said the accused was traced with the help of technical surveillance and the description provided by the victim.
As reported by The Goan on Sunday, the girl, originally from Nepal, had told her mother that an unidentified man, reportedly also a Nepali, approached her at Caranzalem beach on Saturday morning. The man allegedly followed her towards the beach, took her to a bushy area and sexually assaulted her.
The incident was subsequently brought to the Panaji Police Station. However, the absence of a woman police sub-inspector reportedly delayed registration of the offence.
Sources said senior police officers were informed about the requirement of a woman PSI, but the minor and her mother had to wait for more than six hours at the Panaji police station before their complaint could be registered.
Following the complaint, police initiated an investigation and used technical surveillance along with the victim’s description to identify and trace the accused. Further investigation is underway.
