CURCHOREM/PANAJI
Speaking on the sidelines of a press briefing at Police Headquarters in Panaji, DIG Vimal Gupta stated, “We have strong leads in the case and the probe is moving along those lines.”
Curchorem PI Ravindra Dessai stated that the police have interrogated about 30 individuals in connection with the murder of Shobha Karmali at Cacora-Curchorem.
Speaking to The Goan, PI Dessai said investigation is in progress. “Police have interrogated about 30 individuals, while cellphone call records are also being checked and all possible angles are being looked into,” PI Dessai said.
It may be recalled that Shobha Karmali was murdered at her residence on October 7. The post-mortem report confirmed that the death was due to strangulation. On Monday evening, Curchorem police and higher officials from the police department jointly interrogated some people, including the deceased’s maid, but so far no clues have been obtained.
Unlike in the Monika Ghurde murder case, which was cracked in record time, the probe into Karmali’s murder has failed even to identify the accused.
The broad daylight robbery and murder of the elderly woman in a closely knit neighbourhood of Cacora has rattled the entire locality.
On October 7, at around 10.20 am when the maid entered the house where the elderly Karmali couple lived, Shobha was lying on the floor with brown packaging tape wrapped around her neck. The family doctor, who rushed to the spot, declared her dead. The robbers decamped with cash of around Rs 1.20 lakh and one LCD TV. The gold ornaments worn by her were, however, left untouched. Police registered a case of trespassing, robbery and murder.
