Perhaps for the first time in recent years, the Cuncolim police intervened at the Cuncolim Municipal Council meeting on Friday to maintain decorum and order, marred by a spat between councillor Udesh Desai and Chairperson Laximan Naik.
During the uproar followed by the spat between the councillor and the Chairperson, Naik is reported to have used abusive language at the City Father. The Chairperson, however, said that he had used the word since the councillor has been causing disturbance at the meeting. Councillor Udesh on the other hand accused the Chairperson for not following the Goa Municipalities Act in letter and spirit.
As Udesh was repeatedly on his feet during the verbal duel with the Municipal Chairperson, a police sub-inspector attached to the Cuncolim police station intervened to request the councillor that he should take his seat and speak with respect.
When the media later sought to know from the Municipal Chairperson his reaction to the police intervention at the Council meeting, Naik said the police was called for the meeting anticipating trouble.
Trouble between the councillor and the CMC Chairperson began at the time of confirmation of minutes when Udesh demanded to know the fate of his resolution calling for action against then Chief Officer.
The Chairperson replied back saying the resolution was not recorded for not complying with the mandatory requirements, triggering a verbal duel between the two.
Friday’s meeting was convened by the Chairperson to discuss amongst other things to approve projects under the 14th Finance Commission.
