Panaji police have cracked two major thefts at jewellery shops in the capital city and have arrested one person from an interstate gang in connection.
Addressing a news conference in Porvorim on Monday, North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal said the first theft took place at the Vailankanni Jewellery shop opposite the Pharmacy College in Panaji on January 12, while the second theft occurred at the PNG store in St Inez on June 24.
“In both cases, two unknown persons with a common intention entered the respective jewellery shops as customers and, under the pretext of buying gold/diamond jewellery, stole two gold chains and two gold diamond necklaces, all worth Rs 12 lakh,” said SP Kaushal.
SP Kaushal said during the course of the investigation, it was revealed that an interstate criminal gang (Irani Gang) involving Abrar Beg and other accused were allegedly involved in the crime and were presently at Kudche-Raibag in Belagavi.
“Accordingly, the Panaji police team, along with Kudche police staff, took part in coordinated efforts in an overnight operation on June 28 and traced the main accused Abrar Hussain Beg (30) of Kudche-Raibag, Belagavi district,” SP Kaushal said.
“During the investigation, the accused admitted to the crimes at Vailankanni Jewellers and PNG jewellers along with other accused. Police recovered jewellery worth Rs 8 lakh. The accused has been arrested and remanded to 4 days in police custody.”
