The Goa Police has claimed that the State witnessed a drop in crimes and an increase in detection rate in the first month of the year. Director General of Police Jaspal Singh, on Thursday, issued a press statement, claiming that overall crime declined by 53 percent in comparison to the corresponding period last year.
“The major crime head against which a declining trend has been observed is culpable homicide, theft, chain snatching, cheating, criminal breach of trust, mischief, rioting, kidnapping, and hurt cases. The highest decline has been observed in the violent crime of Hurt,” he said.
The State police also achieved a 95 percent detection rate, an increase of three percent as compared to the corresponding period last year. Singh has attributed this to stepping up police patrolling along with the regular briefing of staff in respective beat areas.
“A new initiative ‘Walking the Beat’ has also been initiated. Under this initiative, the Police Inspectors (PIs) and Sub Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs) pick up a random beat for foot patrolling,” the department chief added. Several police stations have already undertaken the exercise during which the policemen booked cases of begging, gambling, etc.
Likewise, the police have booked 60 percent more cases under NDPS Act last month. DGP Goa stated that Police Inspectors have been directed to keep past data in mind at the beginning of each month and achieve a higher rate of detection by the month-end.
“The PIs have also been asked to increase action against gambling. Besides, Traffic Cell and Police Stations are directed to enhance enforcement action particularly against non-wearing of helmets both by rider and pillion rider,” he said.
The DGP further directed the police stations and the traffic cells to deploy two motorcycles each in major towns to enforce action against talking on mobile while riding/driving.
