MAPUSA : Calangute police on Friday seized 1,058.4 litres of liquor worth Rs 43.39 lakh after busting an illegal network allegedly involved in selling foreign-made liquor to distributors in the State without valid documents and evading excise duty and other taxes. A case has been registered against Rajesh Birama (48), a native of Ghatkopar, Mumbai, who is currently residing at Naikawaddo, Calangute. Police raided a godown at Porbawada, Calangute, and recovered around 1,200 bottles of 10 different brands of foreign liquor. The total quantity seized was 1,058.4 litres, valued at Rs 43.39 lakh. According to police, the accused was allegedly selling liquor in the State without the required documents, with the intention of avoiding payment of excise duty and other taxes due to the authorities. The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Goa Excise Act. A notice has been issued to him. PSI Prajit Mandrekar is investigating the case under the supervision of Police Inspector Lakshi Amonkar.
