Mormugao Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sucheta Dessai, has decided to ask Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) to lock the doors of the passage in the building after office hours, so as to prevent beggars and other unwanted elements from using the premises at night.
Taking serious note of the attack on Vasco post office staff by a deranged man on Friday, DySP Dessai has also decided to beef up police patrolling in the area.
“The entire MMC building is unmanned and this encourages anti-social elements to take refuge in the premises at night,” said DySP Dessai while speaking to The Goan.
“The council should also consider the security aspect at the building and lock all the doors of passages after office hours. The council should also appoint security guards, as they cannot expect everything to be handled by the police,” she added.
“We will also step up police patrolling and I will request police inspector to direct the patrolling team to inspect the building as part of their night police duties,” said Dessai.
Asked why the police did not round up beggars causing nuisance near the municipal building and near the railway station, DySP Dessai replied: “We do round up beggars but they are released after being produced before the magistrate.”
“Laws are quite lenient as far as begging is concerned, and hence, beggars are let off with a meagre fine. The moment police begin to catch these beggars and others sleeping in the corridors of the MMC building, they will disappear for next few days only to return to the site at some point in time,” said DySP Dessai.
“The police will do its duty by keeping a strict watch during night patrolling duties but offices housed in the MMC building should also do their part by appointing security guards to safeguard their property,” she added.
