The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) on Monday clarified that it had no role to play in the reduction of seats for those seeking direct entry into engineering courses in the Second Year.
Deputy Director at the DTE (Centralised Admission Division) Pradeep Kusnur told “The Goan” that the decision to reduce seats for direct admission into engineering courses by 50% from the upcoming academic year had been taken by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) at the Centre. The State body of Technical Education had no choice. The DTE however made a representation to the AICTE about the issue, but received a reply in the negative.
“The AICTE made a policy decision as all over India there is an excess of seats. Even though in Goa the case is different, the AICTE says they cannot have separate rules for Goa. We have to accept whatever they have recommended across the country,” Kusnur told “The Goan,” adding, ‘We have full sympathy for the students, but we can’t do anything in light of the AICTE’s decision’.
Many students who wish to pursue engineering, join the degree course in the Second Year, after a three year Diploma in Engineering done immediately after completion of the SSCE.
Students usually bank on the fact that there are a fixed number of seats in second year degree courses reserved for those who want direct admission in the Second Year.
Students and parents claim that this was done without prior intimation, and are now signing an online petition to convince the AICTE to postpone the implementation of these guidelines till the year 2022.
