CORTALIM
Elections to comunidades at Quelossim and Verna will take place on Sunday January 3.
While the Verna Comunidade is likely to have a quorum for conduct of elections, the Quelossim Comunidade may not have an election due to lack of quorum.
Cortalim Zilla Panchayat Member Anthony Vaz, who is the incumbent Quelossim Comunidade president, is pessimistic about the prospects of holding elections to the managing committee.
“I did not have time to galvanize the comunidade members and Gaonkars for the election. I hope members will come in required numbers to conduct the elections,” Vaz told The Goan.
“In the event the quorum of a minimum of 25 members is not present, the Administrator of Comunidades (south) will be informed and he will then request the present comunidade committee to suggest the names of members to represent the managing committee,” informed Joao Philip Pereira, who is the attorney of Cortalim Comunidade and who also represents other comunidades.
Pereira, however, stated that under the new ordinance, which allows the present managing committee to run for the second straight term, it is quite possible that the incumbent members will continue.
