As the decade old issue has come back to haunt the farmers of Nuvem due to the pollution of the Bokti tollem by discharge of sewage waters, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday instructed officials of the PWD and Goa Sewerage Corporation to complete work on the new Fatorda sewerage line by May 2022.
Inspecting the lake waters along with Nuvem MLA Wilfred D’Sa and officials on Friday evening, the Chief Minister also told the PWD officials to cut the road near the district hospital to facilitate discharge of the line.
The Chief Minister said that the issue of inundation of the Bokti tollem and other water bodies by the sewage water has left the fields polluted. He said the officials of the sewerage corporation, who were called for the inspection, have been told to complete all work on the new line by May 2022.
“This is an old issue which has been plaguing the water bodies since many years. A permanent solution will come by May next year,” he said.
Briefing the media, the Nuvem MLA said that water from the damaged sewage pipeline at Ambaji-Fatorda moved towards Nuvem and has polluted the water bodies. “This is not a new phenomenon. This has been taking place for the last 12-13 years since the sewage waters flow towards the water bodies in Nuvem, leaving the fields devastated. Farmers have stopped cultivating the fields as the sewage water prevent them from cultivation,” D’Sa said.
