With the Pomburpa locals raising the hackles against a mega project allegedly involving hill cutting and destruction of forest, the Pomburpa-Olaulim panchayat is now contemplating to revoke the permission granted to the project and may even issue a stop-work order to the ongoing work at the site.
The village panchayat has called for a site inspection of the project on Saturday where a lot of villagers are expected to join.
“After discussing with some experts we have come to realise that the proponents of the project have not got all the necessary approvals. We are planning to revoke the licence issued to the project earlier,” said Leopoldina Fernandes, Sarpanch of Pomburpa-Olaulim panchayat.
“The entire village is against the project. We had to unnecessarily face the music for the wrongdoings of someone else. We will now take corrective measures,” she added.
The sarpanch informed that the site inspection is scheduled at around 11.30 am on Saturday. She also said that local MLA Carlos Ferreira will also be present for the inspection.
In a rare show of solidarity, the villagers of Pomburpa-Ecoxim have come together and vowed to oppose the project.
Several residents organised a candle light march in protest against the project in the village late Thursday night.
Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira along with some activists joined the march expressing solidarity with the villagers.
The villagers condemned the authorities for issuing approvals to massive projects without considering the impact on the environment and problems such projects create on the local residents.
Ferreira said that the department concerned should have not issued the licence since it was a no development zone and a forest area.
He said all necessary steps will be taken to stop the project in the interest of the village.
