Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to ban notes of Rs 1000 and 500 denominations had mixed impact in Ponda market, as fish, vegetable and fruit markets and even petrol pumps accepted the de-monetised denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000.
However, as people flocked to markets with Rs 500 denominations, vendors found it difficult to arrange for change in Rs 100 currency notes.
Speaking to The Goan, Kishore Mamlekar, president of Ponda Vyapari Sanghatana, said there was shortage of only Rs 100 denominations when people tendered Rs 500 notes.
Vijay Gaonkar, a local from Ponda, said they didn’t find any problem while shopping. “I bought fish by handing over a Rs 500 note and the fish vendor easily accepted it,” he said.
As this swift and sudden move is said to be a part of a crackdown on corruption and illegal cash holding, many were seen debating how politicians would clear large amounts of black money.
“For some politicians, this surprise move would put them in real trouble. How can they clear the hoarded black money and that too in short period of time,” asked Sadanand Gaonkar, while debating over the issue.
Former chief minister Ravi Naik has welcomed the move by Prime Minister Narendra Modi by posting it on Facebook.
Later speaking to The Goan, Naik said that he welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision as it would help arrest terror activities.
