CANACONA
The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya at Canacona and Ministry of Human Resource Development have drawn the ire of parents and others for conducting the entrance examination to Std VI on a festive day of a community which kept a major chunk of the students away from answering on April 6, celebrated as Gudi Padwa, a holiday in Goa.
Only 35% of the 1509 students presently studying in Std V in various schools across South Goa appeared for the examination at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Canacona on Saturday.
According to sources, the date of the examination wasn’t changed despite a Hindu sangathna reportedly submitting a memorandum to the management of JNV, Canacona and also to Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javdekar, objecting to holding of the entrance examination on Gudi Padwa would deny many students belonging to the Hindu community an opportunity to answer the exams. But, neither the HRD Ministry nor JNV, Canacona took cognizance of the memorandum and went ahead with the examination on Saturday, the source added.
Only 527 students of the 1509 who had enrolled to answer the entrance examination, appeared at the 7 blocks. The examinations were held at 9 centres -- Canacona, Sanguem, Quepem, Dharbandora, Vasco (2) and Salcete (2), informed a source at JNV, Canacona.
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya annually invites applications and conducts entrance examination of Std V students, to enroll/admit them in Std VI in their school.
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) are a system of alternate schools for gifted students in India. They are run by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, New Delhi, an autonomous organization under the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
JNVs are fully residential and co-educational schools affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi, with classes from VI to XII standard. JNVs are specifically tasked with finding talented children in rural areas of India and providing them with an education equivalent to the best residential school system, without regard to their families’ socio-economic condition.
