PORVORIM
Claiming that Porvoim is an extension of Panaji, Minister for Housing Mauvin Godinho suggested Porvorim could be named as ‘New Panaji’.
“Apart from the seat of power, the Legislative Assembly, and the High Court, major government departments have been shifted to Porvorim. I feel Porvorim can be named as ‘New Panaji’ similar to Mumbai and New Mumbai,” said Godinho.
However, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte later told reporters that the views of the panchayat body and villagers would have to be taken before naming Penha de Franca as New Panaji.
“A portion of Porvorim is part of Penha de Franca village and the Porvorim plateau of Penha de Franca village has developed, but not the remaining portion of the village.”
Responding to the government’s decision to supply 16,000 litres of water to each family per month, Khaunte said some residents of Porvorim constituency do not even get 1,600 litres of water every month.
“This is the harsh reality. The government should ensure first that the people of Goa get water 24x7 and then supply free water. People are prepared to pay for 16,000 litres of water but do not get that amount of water.”
