Ten days after speed cameras were installed on the Porvorim elevated corridor, traffic police have caught 580 vehicles overspeeding -- indicating continuing violations of the 65-kmph speed limit despite repeated accidents. The enforcement comes against the backdrop of four accidents on the flyover since it was opened to traffic on September 11, including the fatal crash on September 13 that killed two people. Three other accidents have since been reported, though these fortunately did not result in casualties.
Traffic officials said the continued overspeeding was a serious concern despite deployment of cameras and police personnel to enforce the speed limit.
“We have deployed police personnel to ensure compliance. From the day the speed cameras were installed till September 25, as many as 580 vehicles were caught overspeeding. The owners have been intimated through SMS and challans are being issued,” the official said.
Two speed cameras were installed on September 15 after officials from the Public Works Department, Transport Department and Traffic Police conducted another inspection of the flyover after the first accident. A third camera was subsequently installed on the descending stretch towards Porvorim from the Atal Setu.
The latest accident was reported around 2.30 am on Friday, when a rental Creta crashed into a divider on the flyover. The crash did not result in any casualties, even as the vehicle was partially damaged. Traffic police said the cameras have enabled closer monitoring of vehicle speeds and violations along the flyover.
