PORVORIM
Five persons were arrested while 13 others were rounded up during a tenant verification drive conducted by Porvorim police at Haliwada-Britona in Penha de Franca.
Porvorim Police Inspector Rahul Parab said the drive was conducted because a large number of migrants reside in Porvorim constituency. Five persons were arrested as they did not have any identity proof.
“Some are residing in huts while others are residing in residential premises. Some migrants with criminal backgrounds commit crimes in the village and leave the State. Under these circumstances, it becomes difficult for the police to arrest the accused,” said PI Parab.
“Porvorim police have informed owners of residential premises as well as officials of cooperative housing societies to provide details of tenants whenever residential premises are given on rent.”
PI Parab admitted that the response from people has been very poor. “Crimes, particularly burglaries and murders, are on the rise in Porvorim and surrounding areas. Hence, police have started this tenant verification drive till the National Games are over.”
“Police is presently conducting tenant verification at Penha de Franca and thereafter, will continue the drive in Salvador do Mundo and Socorro villages,” he added.
