At a time when households are increasingly anxious about the availability of domestic LPG cylinders, a routine inspection by the Bardez taluka civil supplies department has uncovered illegal diversion of subsidised fuel to commercial use.
During the inspection, officials seized two domestic gas cylinders that were being used for cooking at a Porvorim-based restaurant – an act that violates existing regulations, which mandate the use of commercial LPG for eateries, hotels and other business establishments.
The inspection team, led by Civil Supplies Inspector Rajiv Sawant, along with Sub-Inspectors Sadashiv Khandeparkar, Vasudev Shirodkar, Rohit Talankar and Sarvesh Naik Tuyekar, detected the irregularity and initiated action. A formal complaint has since been lodged with the Porvorim police for further investigation.
Officials indicated that the misuse of domestic cylinders is a serious offence, particularly given that such cylinders are subsidised and meant exclusively for household consumption.
“Diversion of domestic LPG for commercial purposes not only violates the law but also affects supply to genuine domestic consumers,” a senior official said.
The incident comes against the backdrop of a reported shortage of commercial LPG cylinders, which are typically used by restaurants and allied businesses. Industry sources suggest that supply constraints and rising costs may be prompting some establishments to resort to illegal alternatives.
The case has raised broader concerns about the extent of such practices in the State. “If one establishment has been caught, there is a possibility that others may also be indulging in similar violations. We will be intensifying inspections in the coming days,” the official added.
Authorities have urged commercial establishments to adhere strictly to regulations, warning that strict action will be taken against those found misusing domestic LPG cylinders.
