Poster war on as battle for Mormugao polls intensifies

Candidates complain that posters, banners being torn by rivals

Poster war on as battle for Mormugao polls intensifies

VASCO
As the political war intensifies for the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) elections, an unusual battle is underway in the port town, with posters and hoardings being the main casualties of these clashes.

While huge posters and banners with symbols and photographs of candidates have adorned many locations at different wards, there are growing complains that posters and banners are being removed, torn or damaged by rivals.

One candidate has even filed a police complaint against unknown persons for damaging his banners.

When contacted, Ward 14 candidate, Aquif Sayed, said many of his posters have been damaged and some were completely destroyed.

“I had installed many huge banners and posters at different locations. We have barely a few days left for canvassing and rivals have already begun partially tearing my posters.”

“In some locations, they have completely torn my posters, leaving only the frame. I have filed a police complaint in this matter and my supporters are now keeping close watch on these

developments.”

“I have been advised not to waste time in tracing the culprit, but to use the time for campaigning,” said Sayad.

When contacted, Ward 25 candidate Preetam Queloscar said his posters had also been damaged or destroyed by rivals.

“I was very upset to find my posters torn by rivals. I wanted to catch the accused red-handed but my supporters advised me to act after the elections.”

“I wonder why my rivals have to stoop to such low levels during elections. However on the other hand, I am glad that their desperate act shows that the rivals are scared of my popularity and my position in the ward.”

“I have now replaced many of the torn posters at different locations,” said Queloscar.
