Covid cases are on the rise in Pernem at a time when authorities have stepped up the Covid vaccination drive in villages and tourists, visitors and a large number of people continue to defy safety protocols at beaches and public places in Pernem taluka.
On Wednesday, five new cases were reported in Arambol (1), Pernem town (2), Malpe (1) and Morjim (1). There are 125 Covid active cases which have been recorded at the Pernem Community Health Centre (114) and the Cansarvarnem Primary Health Centre (11).
The State government's 'Tika Utsav' campaign is being conducted in different villages across Pernem taluka.
So far, Pernem taluka has recorded over 1,500 Covid cases and about 20 persons people have succumbed to the virus.
Even though talathis and panchayat secretaries have been authorised to impose fines on those flouting the SOPs, they are rarely seen penalising people violating the SOPs in public spaces.
Meanwhile, crowds of tourists and visitors continue to flock at the beaches in Pernem taluka, without adhering to any safety protocols and other health guidelines.
