Power rebate scam: Delay in trial takes toll on witnesses

MARGAO

The long delay in the trial of the Power rebate scam allegedly involving former Power Minister Mauvin Godinho seemed to have taken a toll on the witnesses.

If the prosecution had submitted to South Goa Sessions Court at the last date of hearing that witnesses summoned by the Court are not traceable, the prosecution on Friday made another submission before Sessions Judge Irshad Agha that summons issued to four witnesses have returned with a report that they have expired.

The death certificates certifying the death of the four witnesses were also attached.

Meanwhile, the Sessions Judge on Friday issued a fresh non-bailable warrant against accused 4 after the Court rejected the application moved by the accused for cancellation of the warrant issued on the last date of the hearing.

Meanwhile, the Court on Friday recorded and completed the deposition of prosecution witness Basil Francis Alvares.

The former power minister and incumbent Industries Minister Mauvin Godinho was granted an exemption by the court for today’s hearing.

The matter will come up for a hearing on April 12.
