Underlining the need to impart quality education, President of India Pranab Mukherjee stressed on the need to adopt global practices for world-class academic management.
Speaking at the 29th annual convocation of Goa University, Mukherjee said, “To prepare graduates for a competitive global economy, we have to impart quality education in our institutions. This will call for adoption of global best practices for world-class academic management. Our institutions have to work relentlessly towards excellence. They have to provide the best of amenities to their academic community, models of teaching have to be adaptive to the latest trends and also the changing learner profile. There has to be an alliance between the IT-enabled platforms like MOOCs and knowledge networks, and pedagogy.”
He also said that a strong research eco-system has to be built on the plank of institutional collaborations, research parks, and talented researchers and there has to be close link between Indian universities and industries.
Expressing happiness over GU’s unique initiatives to provide a platform for interaction between achievers in different fields and its students, he said, “The Visiting Research Professorship Programme of this university has brought some of India’s brightest minds here during its last four years. It has made the knowledge and wisdom of these experts available to the students as well as members of the public.”
Mukherjee was also conferred a honorary D Litt by Goa University at the ceremony held at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium, Bambolim.
In all, 56 research scholars were conferred PhD, with 26 of them being from the Faculty of Life Sciences and Environment, followed by 13 from the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. Additionally, 77 others were honoured with prizes scholarships and medals in their respective faculty.
For the first time, the Goa University has made their graduating students wear stoles in the colour of the degree they received “
blue for Bachelor’s Degree, green for Master’s Degree, golden yellow for the MPhil Degree and Diplomas and red for Doctoral degree.
Nonetheless, V M Salgaocar Institute of International Hospitality Education, Manora, Raia was honoured
with the ‘Cleanest College’ award for the academic year 2016-17.
