President Ram Nath Kovind potentially gleamed an old controversy when he listed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) among organisations which contributed to the struggle for liberation of Goa from colonial Portuguese rule in his official speech at the Liberation Day function.

During his speech Kovind briefly delved into the liberation movement and mentioned the RSS, the Hindu right-wing organisation he himself was a pracharak of before being elevated to the country's top post, as one of the organisations which fought for Goa's liberation along with Azad Gomantak Dal, Goa Mukhti Sena and Goa Vimochan Samiti.

The issue of the RSS being part of Goa's liberation struggle has often snowballed into a controversy in Goa.

In the early 2000s when hundreds of North Indians, reportedly RSS members, were granted the 'political sufferers' tag by the then Manohar Parrikar-led government more than four decades after Goa was liberated, raking up a huge controversy then.
