While the number of female
teachers is the highest at primary level, the percentage decreases as it moves up the hierarchy. Of the 3,775 teachers at primary level, 3,427 are females; which is 90.78 percent of the total number of teachers. Of the 2,752 teachers at middle level, 2,083 are
females, which constitute 75.69 per cent of the total number of teachers. As you move upwards at secondary level, of the 3,212 teachers, 2,318 are females which comprises of 72.17 per cent of the total number. The number reduces further in case of teachers at higher secondary level with female teachers forming 65.16 per cent of the total number of teachers. Interestingly, at none of the levels the total number of male teachers outnumber
the total number of female teachers. Speaking to The Goan, an official in the State DoE said the trend of female teachers outnumbering male teachers has always existed.
“Primary teachers have to pursue DEd which is mostly preferred by females. There are hardly any males who prefer to pursue DEd Additionally, teaching is a sophisticated
job, especially when it comes to primary level as the teachers has to manage children below 9 years of age,” said the official. “Moreover, females are more inclined towards education sector and they are more sensitive towards the issues related to children.
Another factor is patience. Women are said to have more patience then the men which is an added advantage”, he said. Another factor that he stressed on was the psychology
of people when it comes to teaching. “Teaching is said to be women-oriented probably
because women tend to play a major role is nurturing lives of children than the men,”
he said.
