Dr Raghunath Mashelkar, one of India’s most celebrated scientists of Goan origin, was honoured at a felicitation ceremony held at the Kala Academy auditorium on Thursday.

The event, attended by dignitaries, academicians, and students, paid tribute to his remarkable contributions to science, innovation, and public policy.

Mashelkar, recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, is known for his pioneering work in polymer science and his leadership as Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

He has also been a strong advocate for intellectual property rights and innovation-led entrepreneurship.

In his address, Mashelkar reflected on his journey from Goa to becoming a globally respected scientist.

“Innovation is not a choice, it is a necessity. India must lead in creating solutions for the world,” he said and urged young scientists to embrace creativity and resilience, stressing that science must serve society.

“Technology should reach the poorest of the poor. That is true progress,” he said.

The scientist also spoke of his Goan roots, saying, “Goa gave me my foundation. I carry that spirit wherever I go,” drawing warm applause from the audience, which included many young students.

The felicitation underscored the importance of nurturing scientific excellence and inspiring future generations with several speakers describing Mashelkar as a role model for Goa and India.

The ceremony highlighted not only his achievements but also his vision that science must be harnessed not just for discovery, but for the betterment of society.
