Social activist Pratima Coutinho, along with residents of Navelim, held a protest outside the Margao police station on Monday. They were demanding action and justice for a youth and his family, who were allegedly attacked by a group of anti-social elements last week.

Pratima said that a group of men from Margao, including a known repeat offender, had brutally assaulted the youth. She added that when the victim tried to escape and reached his house in Sinquetim-Navelim, the group followed him and damaged a vehicle outside the house.

Criticising the police for not filing an FIR against the accused, Pratima questioned if the Margao police were under political pressure. “We want the police to take this case seriously. The youth was badly beaten, and a car was damaged. It’s time the Margao police wake up and take action,” she said.

When contacted, Margao Police Inspector Suraj Samant said some people had been detained for disturbing the peace. “At the time, the complainant did not mention any damage to the car in Sinquetim. We will now check CCTV footage and take appropriate action,” he said.
