Expresses distress over rise in deaths due to road mishaps

Expressing his distress on the rise of deaths due to road accidents, North Goa Planning and Development Authority (NGPDA) Chairman and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo on Wednesday called upon the government to expedite work in putting road infrastructure in place in the State.
He stressed on the need to widen roads wherever necessary and to give top priority to road engineering.
“We need to ensure that all speed breakers are painted, so that the motorists are pre-warned. In my area, I have personally taken interest and painted most of the speed breakers. It is necessary to do so all over the State,” Lobo said, while addressing a news conference in Calangute on Wednesday.
He said it was not enough to enforce traffic rules and issue fines to public and hoped the government would ensure that proper infrastructure was put in place.
“Enforcing traffic rules is part of the system to restore discipline on roads. But at the same time, we also need to put proper road infrastructure in place,” the MLA said.
A sudden spurt in road mishaps in the last couple of days has claimed lives of young persons. Two young men were killed in a truck-scooter mishap along the NH17 near Bastora on Monday. On the same day, a teenager was killed in Cortalim by a speeding car. On Wednesday, two women from Cuncolim were killed after a speeding truck knocked down their scooter at Tilamol junction in Quepem.
The Calangute MLA has achieved accolades for taking pro-active steps in widening some major roads in his constituency. The key 2-km long Mapusa-Parra road has been recently widened even as Parra Tinto has been beautified with footpaths along both sides of the road.
