With the PWD and health officials descending at Indira Nagar-Chimbel to disconnect water supply of households releasing sewage in the drainage, the residents knocked the doors of St Cruz MLA Tony Fernandes and sought his help in resolving the issue.
In turn, MLA Fernandes sought an appointment with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and urged him to grant an extension of another two months, so that common soak pits could be built as compliance to the NGT order.
It may be recalled that The Goan had highlighted that more than 1,000 households at Indira Nagar stare at disconnection of water supply as Chimbel PHC has issued an order, based on NGT directives, for immediate disconnection of the same as the residents have failed to stop release of sewage waste into drainage, ultimately leading to contamination of the river water.
The delegation that accompanied the MLA included Chimbel Sarpanch Chandrakant Kunkolkar, panchas Mohan Narve, Rosy Uttukuri and Ajay Borkar. North Goa collector R Menaka was also present.
Giving patient hearing to the delegation, CM Sawant is reported to have acceded to the demand. However, on recommendation of the collector, Sawant advised that all recipients of the notice should give a sworn undertaking stating that they will comply with the order within three months, failing which the PWD will be allowed to go ahead with disconnection of water supply.
Later, at a public meeting held near Shree Mahadev Temple, Indira Nagar, MLA Fernandes relayed to the public the assurance made by the chief minister and urged them to provide copies of the notices to him.
“The expenses of filing the affidavit will be borne by me,” Fernandes stated, while thanking the CM for his intervention in the matter.
