A group of 21 contract workers of the PWD Sewerage department in Vasco protested outside the PWD office in Baina on Monday morning, after claiming they had not received their wages for the last eight months.
The contract workers claimed that despite being unpaid for several months, they had continued with their duties, diligently working for the last 8 months and completing all jobs on time.
“We have not been paid for the last 8 months and we have a family to support. Our children are studying and we are in a bad state. We request the PWD to release our payment as soon as possible,” said one aggrieved worker Chandrahas Pandre, while speaking to reporters.
Another woman worker, Nisha Mandrekar, added: “I am a widow and don’t have the support of anyone. I have a daughter and we are only two in the family. I have borrowed money from others to take care of her education, but since I have not been paid, I cannot repay my loans.”
“What should I do? I request the government to pay us and if possible, enroll us under the PWD labours society,” pleaded Mandrekar.
Another worker, Sagar Naik said the workers have been working regularly since the last eight months despite being unpaid.
“We have had several assurance from many politicians that we would be absorbed. But all the assurance have failed. At least, we are entitled to our payments and we request them to release our payments immediately,” said Naik
