Villagers from Thane in Sattari taluka said the Valpoi PWD (water supply) has failed to meet the deadline of completing the work on laying the Dabose-Hivre pipeline before Diwali festival.
The villagers said the officials had assured the people from Thane Panchayat to supply water through the new pipeline before Diwali, the work on which was started two years back.
It may be recalled that the earlier panchayat members had managed to get sanction for the Dabose-Hivre water pipeline at the cost of about Rs 9 crore. The existing pipeline is over 20 years old and it cannot meet the water requirements at Hivrem, Charavane and many parts of Thane Panchayat.
Speaking to The Goan, Ramesh Gaonkar from Hivre said the water department officials had assured to supply treated water before Diwali festival.
"The work on laying the pipeline still requires time. The earlier Thane Panchayat members had succeeded in getting this project sanctioned after a wait for 20 years," he said.
Another villager from Pali Dasharth Gaonkar said the work on laying pipeline should be speeded up. "The department concerned was supposed to fulfil the assurance regarding supply of treated water before Diwali," he said.
When contacted, Valpoi PWD (water supply) assistant engineer Eknath Paste said the work is delayed due to continuous rains for the last one month.
"It is not possible to lay pipeline during rains because it is on the main road from Valpoi to Thane and there is movement of traffic on the road. However, the work will be completed shortly and villagers will get treated water," he added.
