PWD imposes road digging ban ahead of monsoon season

MAPUSA

The Public Works Department (PWD) has announced a complete ban on road digging across the State from May 15 until the end of the monsoon season, which officially concludes on September 30.

In an order issued by Chief Engineer (NH) Vallabh Pai, all Executive Engineers of the Roads Sector have been directed to ensure that no road excavation is permitted and that no new permissions are granted during this period. “During this time, there will be a ‘no digging period’,” the order states.

The PWD has also warned that officials failing to enforce the directive will be held accountable. The decision comes amid growing concerns over the state of roads, many of which have been dug up for utility and infrastructure works. As reported by The Goan, several stretches remain excavated with restoration efforts pending.

With the monsoon expected to arrive in the State within the next 15 days, questions are being raised about whether the affected roads will be fully restored in time to withstand the seasonal rains.
