Seeking to dispel several concerns and rumours over the structural integrity of the Zuari bridge, a senior Public Works Department (PWD) team on Monday inspected the bridge at Cortalim and declared it safe for motorists.

Sources told The Goan that engineers from IIT Mumbai were also involved in the inspection along with senior officials of PWD and National Highway Authorities.

“The inspection was conducted on the quiet and information was not leaked out regarding the time and date of the inspection.”

“Recently, a video had gone viral on social media regarding rumours about a crack on the bridge and this had cause considerable concern among the people,” said the source.

The team is reported to have inspected several places along the bridge and noted that while the coat of asphalt had worn out, there were no cracks as such.

“After the inspection, the PWD declared the bridge to be safe and dismissed rumours which had sought to create a panic among the people,” said the source.

When contacted, Vasco Traffic Police Inspector Roy Pereira said he had received a message from his headquarters stating that traffic may have had to be halted for about 10 minutes, if needed.

“When we reached the traffic circle at Cortalim, we were again informed that there was no need to halt traffic movement at the Zuari Bridge,” said PI Pereira.
