PWD min visits Upasnagar flyover area, addresses pedestrian safety

A long-pending demand for safer pedestrian access at Upasnagar gained fresh momentum after PWD Minister Digambar Kamat on Wednesday conducted a joint inspection of the area along with Cortalim MLA Anton Vas and local residents.

During the site visit, locals reiterated their demand for an underpass, stating that the flyover has made crossing the busy stretch risky, particularly for schoolchildren, senior citizens and daily commuters. Responding to the concerns, Kamat assured that the department would explore practical solutions to ease pedestrian movement.

Addressing residents, Kamat said that if constructing a full-fledged underpass is not technically viable, the government would consider installing a foot overbridge equipped with escalators to assist elderly persons and others who may find it difficult to use staircases. He further stated that officials would examine the feasibility of creating a motorable underpass beneath the flyover, provided structural and safety parameters permit such a move.

MLA Anton Vas said that a major portion of the issue had been addressed following the joint inspection and direct interaction with engineers and residents. He expressed confidence that a workable solution would be finalised after technical assessments are completed.

Social worker Achut Naik announced that a seven-member committee would be formed to coordinate with authorities. He said the committee would soon seek a follow-up meeting with the PWD Minister, the local MLA and officials of the National Highways Authority of India to discuss possible solutions in detail.

Residents have urged authorities to expedite the process, stating that timely intervention is crucial to prevent accidents and ensure safe access across the highway stretch.
