A stone sculpture believed to be of Goddess Kelbai was discovered during excavation work at Mhalshekarwada in Poriem. The sculpture was unearthed while excavation was underway for the construction of a house belonging to Mahadev Suresh Chari.
According to available information, the stone idol surfaced while foundation work for the house was in progress. As news of the discovery spread, a large number of local residents gathered at the site to witness the finding. Locals believe that the sculpture represents Goddess Kelbai, a deity associated with the region’s traditional worship practices.
Similar discoveries of ancient stone idols have been reported in different parts of Goa during excavation activities in the past.
Authorities and experts are expected to examine the sculpture to determine its age, artistic style, and historical importance. This unexpected discovery has generated enthusiasm among residents in and around Poriem.
By examining the sculpture’s design, carving style, type of stone, and craftsmanship, experts may be able to estimate the period to which it belongs. This can provide important clues about the society, culture, and artistic traditions of that era.
The temple in the Mhalshekarwada area is believed to house several local goddesses. The sanctum is associated with seven deities — Kelbai, Mahalsa, Brahmani, Zogueshwari, Panzon Maya, Mauli, and Bhumika — who have been worshipped by generations of local residents.
