PWD repairs Guirim pipeline breach but water woes persist

PANAJI

The Public Works Department (PWD) on Sunday afternoon completed the repairs of the half-a-metre diameter water pipeline which had burst on Saturday at Monte de Guirim, inundating roads there and disrupting water supply in the village and two other neighbouring villages -- Sangolda and Saligao.

PWD officials said, the pipe which had burst when contractors laying underground power cables were excavating. was restored by 3 pm on Sunday and water supply has also resumed.

However, supply to the consumers will take at least another 24 hours for normalisation, the officials said.

People in some areas of Guirim, Saligao and Sangolda villages continued to face either low pressure or no water at all from the PWD line.

Contractors of the Electricity Department have been excavating stretches of roads in these villages for the past several months to lay the underground power cables

On Saturday at around 9 pm, the water pipeline at Monte de Guirim burst when an excavator inadvertently damaged the pipe.

Vast amounts of water burst out of the breached pipeline which inundated the nearby roads including the underpass on the National Highway.

A large area was also flooded including the road leading to the Guirim village from the highway obstructing vehicular movement.

It took some time for the PWD officials to shut the supply to the pipeline feeding the area where the pipe burst from Porvorim. Onward villages of Saligao, Sangolda and Calangute too were affected.
