Despite repeated assurances from the Public Works Department (PWD), the dug-up roads in Angod, Mapusa, remain in a deplorable state, with mounds of mud and open pits left unattended for over two months.

The situation has caused severe inconvenience to residents, motorists and local businesses.

The PWD (water works) is undertaking a large-scale project to upgrade the water supply infrastructure in Mapusa, which has led to extensive excavation of internal roads in Angod.

However, the ongoing work has turned the area into a virtual war zone, with uneven road surfaces posing serious risks, particularly to two-wheeler riders. Dust pollution has also emerged as a major concern, severely affecting residents and business owners.

Several local entrepreneurs have complained of declining sales due to the poor condition of the roads.

“Our business has taken a hit over the last two months. Customers avoid coming due to the dusty environment and rough roads,” said Peter D’Sa, who runs a pharmacy in the area.

Similarly, restaurants near Alankar Theatre have reported a sharp decline in footfall.

“We have reduced our stock of milk packets due to the dropping number of customers. The road conditions are terrible, parking is difficult because of the accumulated mud and dust pollution is driving people away,” a restaurant owner lamented.

The current roadwork follows previous excavations for underground power cabling and sewerage works, adding to the woes of residents and businesses.

Given Angod’s proximity to the main market, the area witnesses heavy vehicular movement, further compounding the chaos.

Locals are now urging authorities to expedite road repairs and provide relief from the hazardous conditions that have disrupted daily life and business operations.
