The PWD Sewerage department has finally decided to adopt the vacuum technology to handle and dispose of sewage generated in the low lying areas of Margao.
With the issue of sewage disposal under the High Court lens in the Public Interest Litigation filed by Navelim citizen Antonio Alvares, the PWD Sewerage had roped in a Mumbai-based consultant to explore the possibility of adopting the vacuum technology to deal with sewage disposal in the commercial capital.
After a review of the matter with officials of different agencies, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat told the media in the presence of Margao Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar that the agencies roped in by the PWD has conducted survey of the low lying areas of Malbhat, Gandhi market, Calconda, Aquem where the possibility of laying an underground sewage line is ruled out.
In fact, Kamat said that the Mumbai-based agency will submit its report along with the estimates before the PWD floats a tender to adopt the vacuum technology with pumping stations.
“The agency has recommended the vacuum technology in the low lying areas of Malbhat, Calconda, Gandhi market, besides Aquem to channelize the sewage generated and connect the same to the underground line with pumping stations”, Kamat said, adding that the agency is expected to submit the report along with estimates within eight days time.
The Margao Municipal Council had issued show cause notices to around 145 households in the low lying areas of the city after the civic body found that their waste waters was finding its way into the storm water drains.
