Acting on complaints from locals at Mandrem regarding hill-cutting incidents at Junswada-Amrapali area, Mandrem Sarpanch Amit Sawant inspected the site on Tuesday.
Some JCB vehicles found involved in the hill-cutting activity were seized and handed over to the police.
According to sources, there has been massive hill-cutting activity going on in Mandrem and locals have complained to the panchayat.
The panchayat claimed it had not issued any no-objection certificate or permission for hill-cutting in the area and issued a notice to those involved in the activity to present documents by 12 noon, but there was no response from the party concerned.
Mandrem Sarpanch Amit Sawant, the panchayat secretary, panch Robert Fernandes, Miguel Fernandes, Kiran Sawant and Chetana Pednekar went to the spot, stopped the hill-cutting, activity and issued a notice.
The JCB vehicles were confiscated and handed over to the police. The panchayat members also noticed that a swimming pool has been constructed in the same area.
Incidentally, the issue of hill-cutting activity had been raised during TCP Minister Vishwajit Rane’s visit to Pernem constituency on Monday.
When media persons informed the minister there had been hill-cutting activity in Pernem taluka, Rane assured immediate action against those involved, but also made it clear that those who have licences for construction should not be targeted.
